Why I built Spotlist

I led design for Google Maps. And something I found there surprised me: the people building Maps weren't using it to keep track of their favorite restaurants. They were using documents and spreadsheets.

When I asked why, the answer was simple. Google Maps is built for a different job: finding something nearby, getting directions, figuring out if it's open. It's excellent at that. But curating and sharing personal lists of places you love just wasn't a problem it needed to solve.

That observation stuck with me, because I was one of those people. I'd been keeping lists for years in notes, spreadsheets, and docs shared with friends. I'm the kind of person who plans trips around great food. So I built the thing I wished existed.
